The Name of an entity is an encompassment of its unique signature representing its individuality. To Fellowship eyes, every entity on Athera has a Name, from grains of sand to living organisms.

The great drakes before the First Age were able to spin dreams out of the deepest mysteries into Named creation.

Spoiler warning: Contains plot elements from Curse of the Mistwraith.

Although every entity has a Name, not every Name is known to the Fellowship. Conjecture states that Traithe opened himself to learn the Mistwraith's name in Third Age 4993, it damaged his continuity of function, and he was then forced to cauterize this knowledge from his being. This has ramifications during the casting of strands -- because the Fellowship do not know the Name of the Mistwraith, they can only track its effects against other entities -- they cannot track it directly.

Role in the Story

Spoiler warning: Contains plot elements from multiple books in the series.

Curse of the Mistwraith

Third Age 5638: Following an attack by the Mistwraith at Ithamon, Asandir scrys the surrounding environs for traces of the Mistwraith. Arithon notices that the Sorcerer knows everything by Name:

Their Names were as visible to him as signatures. He knew the pebbles of the dry water course, each and every one by touch, and the tangles of bundled energies that signified each grain of sand.[1]

When Lysaer is affected by a wraith before the coronation at Etarra, the Fellowship notes that his Name signature has drifted, and they can no longer track him. The same occurs to Arithon, and Sethvir must track him down by means of the mare he rides, Tishealdi.

Ships of Merior

Third Age 5646: When Asandir and Sethvir create a homing beacon to locate Kharadmon, they tie it to the Named presence of Athera's trees, closing the spell with the Name of Kharadmon himself.

Warhost of Vastmark

Third Age 5646: Sethvir is pursued by free wraiths in Althain Tower, but without a proper Name, the wraiths cannot be properly redeemed.

Peril's Gate

Third Age 5670: When Raven shows Jieret his interconnectedness with the world, Jieret perceives that all Names in existence are contained in his personal consciousness.

Stormed Fortress

Third Age 5671: In Scarpdale's grimward, Seshkrozchiel reveals that drakes do not receive a Name until they have mated. However, Asandir does not believe that this is wholly true, based on Ciladis' study of the methurien.
