Methuri, or "hate-wraiths", were First Age parasites similar to iyats. The original "methurien" were formed from a leaked bit of storm charge that displaced half-formed beings from the thought-shaped, nether realm of drake-dreams. Deranged by pain, these half-demon, half-monster beings rampaged and slayed with driving hatred. They were the cause of the massacre at Leorne in First Age 815.
They died on Paravian weapons, only to be released as free wraiths which then possessed live hosts, mutating their lines to create weakened offspring, so that the pool of potential host animals was wider. The matrix of the possessed creature warped outside the Law of the Major Balance. After the destruction of the Seardluin, the methuri were the only remaining threat to Paravian survival. They were still present when mankind arrived in Third Age 1.
By the Third Age, the Fellowship have eradicated the methuri, but their host animals (like the meth-snake and quetzal) continue to crossbreed in Mirthlvain Swamp (which is never left unwatched specifically for this reason).
