Headhunters are groups of townsfolk skilled at tracking, capturing, or killing clansmen in the wilds of Athera. In various towns, headhunters have organized into leagues (such as the Northern League of Headhunters in Etarra under Mayor Pesquil) and generally receive bounties for clan scalps. The Western League of Headhunters exists as well, but does not play a major role in the story.

Role in the Story

Spoiler warning: Contains plot elements from multiple books in the series.

Fugitive Prince

Third Age 5647: After an edict that threatens clansmen with slavery at the oar, the bounty for living male barbarians is doubled to offset a potential loss of scalp bounties.

Initiate's Trial

Third Age 5688: As Mayor of Etarra, Lysaer creates a treaty with Barach s'Valerient, bringing stable peace to the clans in Rathain. Only clansmen found raiding outside of the free wilds are subject to execution, and then only after trial. Headhunters continue their hunt for clansmen surreptitiously, rewarded by the True Sect out of Erdane.

Headhunters out of Tysan detect Esfand, Khadrien, and Siantra near the border between Rathain and Tysan. With the help of a True Sect diviner, the headhunters pursue the clan children perilously close to Athili.
