A geas is a compulsion bound by enchantment. A person under the effects of a geas is possessed by whatever pattern the creator laid upon it. The Fellowship-granted gifts of the five family lines are each considered to be a geas.

Role in the Story

Spoiler warning: Contains plot elements from multiple books in the series.

Curse of the Mistwraith

Third Age 5637: The Shadows of Mearth attack with Davien's geas (the Curse of Mearth) which loops a person's mind around their most painful memories. Arithon is touched by this geas just before entering the Worldsend gate to Paravia, and Asandir frees his mind.

Ships of Merior

Third Age 5645: Asandir casts a geas upon Dakar which forces him stay by Arithon's side, or else it will "react in force and sour every pleasure of the flesh, even to the food and drink your body requires to survive"[1]. Following the infamy at Alestron, Dakar attempts to set a geas of thirst on the s'Brydion brothers.

Warhost of Vastmark

Third Age 5647: Arithon releases Dakar from this geas during a scrying aboard the Khetienn.

Peril's Gate

Third Age 5670: Lirenda uses a sigil of summoning upon a field captain of Jaelot. This geas causes him to assemble a team and pursue Arithon to Ithamon, past all sane limits.
