The Fourth Lane runs along the longitude of the Second Age Paravian ruins in Vastmark, Shand and the Penstair ruins in Rathain, passing through the site of Kewar Tunnel as well as Caith-al-Caen.

Role in the Story

Spoiler warning: Contains plot elements from multiple books in the series.

Ships of Merior

'Third Age 5646: When Arithon and Dakar travel to Vastmark, Dakar believes that Arithon will travel to the power focus on the Fourth Lane, but is proven wrong.

Peril's Gate

Third Age 5670: Arithon is crossing the Fourth Lane on Spring Equinox when Kharadmon presses him into service. Arithon uses his mastery of music and ties to the land to bind the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Lanes in harmony. This allows him to tame the Lanes and end the unnatural winter brought about by Morriel's attack on Athera (but only within the boundaries of Rathain).

Traitor's Knot

Third Age 5670: This lane runs closest to the free wilds of Halwythwood, where Arithon reunites with Elaira.

Initiate's Trial

Third Age 5923: An encounter between Asandir and a young drake causes an unnatural storm to hit Anglefen, leading to out-of-season lightning squalls along the Fourth Lane.

Destiny's Conflict

Third Age 5924: Dakar enacts a plan to plant one of the True Sect's stolen copper rods at Caith-al-Caen. This draws lightning from seasonal storms to the Fourth Lane and triggers hallucinations in The Hatchet's men across Daon Ramon Barrens. The Fellowship mitigate the latitudinal bleed off by warding Seshkrozchiel's hibernation location and protecting Desh-thiere's wards at Rockfell Pit.
