A culverin is a seige weapon constructed based on the proscribed writings of Magyre, who experimented with black powder. It would be the predecessor of a cannon, and consists of a cast bronze tube supported on a wooden frame. A culverin shoots round stone spheres, weighing about thirty pounds. Because the research is proscribed, weapons based upon black powder do not exist on Athera.

Third Age 5645: The s'Brydion family develops a culverin based on the fireworks research of Magyre. Bransian reveals that this took five years of work after discovering the scholar's papers. The weapon is closely guarded -- they employ a hedge witch to hide the location from the Fellowship, but through the earth link, Sethvir senses the deaths of trees when the weapon is tested. Shorthanded, the Fellowship asks Dakar to visit Alestron and take an inventory of their armory. These events lead up to the "second infamy", where Alestron's armory explodes.
