In times of direst need, the Fellowship casts strands to examine the possibile paths of the future. During this ritual, the Sorcerers create abstract rods of energy, each one representing a Named entity or entities on Athera. These rods are created over a square of dark velvet that Sethvir keeps in the library of Althain Tower.

The first three strands represent the triad of mysteries underlaying all of Athera's life. These are followed by forty Named strands representing the "essence of the ruler, place, or power".[1] Un-Named entities like the Mistwraith cannot be mapped directly -- their effects can only be felt on the other strands.

The strands are highly sensitive -- the Fellowship can impress possible future events upon them, and they will react accordingly. The complexity of strands can be interpreted by a Fellowship Sorcerer at a glance. A less skilled mage, such as a spellbinder, must use tienelle to keep up.
