Third Age 5922: Asandir arrives at the clan outpost near the Pass of Orlan to designate Saroic as the next caithdein, ahead of the uncle who the clans had originally designated. Saroic is the third grandson of the acting caithdein at that time. He volunteers to tend to Asandir's horse and is later disappointed to find that the Sorcerer does not plan to return to the outpost or provide further guidance about Saroic's new appointment.
Third Age 5923: As acceded caithdein, Saroic oversees the flow of refugees at the output in the Pass of Orlan. He receives word from a scout that The Hatchet's army has overrun defenses around the outpost. He orders the surrounding forest burned to buy time for evacuation, even though it's against Charter Law. Against orders, his uncle has Saroic tied up and sent away with the refugees. Saroic escapes to safety although his uncle never rejoins him.
Saroic and the fleeing clansmen receive a narrow chance at flight when early winter storms close the northern harbors in Tysan. It is implied that the Fellowship may have had a hand in this storm's direction.
Third Age 5924: The True Sect army continues to harass and contain Saroic's survivors around the Plain of Karmak through the summer, but the main thrust of The Hatchet's campaign focuses on Rathain. Saroic's evasions lead The Hatchet to pull additional troops away from northern Tysan to join the campaign in Daon Ramon Barrens.
