Elshian is an Athlien Paravian -- a bard and master instrument maker. Only two of his lyranthes still exist on Athera. The first is always held in trust by the Masterbard. Passing this instrument on to an apprentice is also a symbolic passing of the office itself.

Elshian also carved a whistle out of the tine of one of Shehane Althain's antlers which can summon help from the current warden of Althain Tower across time and space. This whistle is stored in Althain Tower.

Role in the Story

Spoiler warning: Contains plot elements from multiple books in the series.

Curse of the Mistwraith

Third Age 5637: Arithon discovers a second lyranthe in a storeroom in the west outpost of Tysan. It has an outwardly poor appearance, and Lady Maenalle notes that all the clan bards had passed it over for instruments with a prettier appearance. Asandir restrings this instrument with silver strings and Arithon takes ownership of it.

Third Age 5638: Elshian's second lyranthe is smashed by Lysaer while he is under the influence of one of Desh-thiere's wraith.

Ships of Merior

Third Age 5645: When the office of Masterbard passes from Halliron to Arithon, the Masterbard's lyranthe exchanges hands as well.

Initiate's Trial

Third Age 5923: It is revealed that the Masterbard's lyranthe has been guarded by the clans of Rathain since Arithon's capture two centuries earlier.

Destiny's Conflict

Third Age 5924: It is revealed that the Masterbard's lyranthe was taken from Arithon by Dakar during the prince's capture in Third Age 5674.

Third Age 5925: When Arithon discovers the Paravians' secret sanctuary, Elshian speaks on his behalf, arguing that a bard of his stature should not be allowed to fade from the world.
